The origins of the Michelin Guide
In 1889 the brothers André and Edouard Michelin founded the tire company that bears their name. In order to increase sales, the Michelin brothers made a small guide that included useful information for travelers, such as maps, instructions on how to change a tire, refueling stations and a list of places to eat and stay during the trip.
In the beginning the guide was free, since it was given with the purchase of tires, but in the year 1920 they began to sell it. Given the growing interest in the restaurant section of the guide, the Michelin brothers decided to recruit a team of anonymous inspectors, who were in charge of evaluating the restaurants, since the guide mentioned precisely the quality of the establishments.
