What is Cova Tallada?
Cova Tallada is a former sandstone quarry located at sea level beneath the cliffs of the Cap de Sant Antoni Marine Reserve. Although it officially belongs to the municipality of Jávea (Xàbia), most visitors access it from Dénia.
What appears today to be a vast natural cave is actually a combination of naturally formed caverns and man-made chambers carved over centuries to extract piedra tosca, a local sandstone widely used in the traditional architecture of the Marina Alta region.
Its unique beauty and stunning natural surroundings have made it one of the most popular excursions in the Valencian Community.
Cova Tallada Permit
Due to the high number of visitors and the fragility of the ecosystem, access is regulated from 15 June to 15 October (inclusive). Outside these dates, no permit is required.
During the regulated period, entry without prior authorisation is not permitted. Permits must be obtained exclusively through the official website of the Valencian Government's Natural Parks.
Parking
During the summer months, traffic and parking can be challenging, so it's advisable to plan your visit in advance.
Parking near the end of the Les Rotes Road is extremely limited and is often restricted during peak season. The best option is to use the public car parks near Hotel Les Rotes and continue to the start of the trail using the available transport services.
During the busiest periods, shuttle buses or tourist trains usually operate between the car parks and the beginning of the walking route. From there, simply head to the end of Via Làctea, where the official trail to the cave begins...
How to Get to Cova Tallada
Most visitors choose the shortest walking route from Dénia. The main access point is at the end of the Les Rotes Road, where traffic management is particularly important during the busiest months.

This option allows you to admire the dramatic cliffs from the sea and approach the cave from a completely different perspective.
The route typically covers around four kilometres and passes some of the most spectacular stretches of the Alicante coastline. Along the way, you'll paddle beneath the Torre del Gerro and the impressive cliffs of Cap de Sant Antoni.

History of Cova Tallada
For centuries, Cova Tallada was used as a quarry for extracting piedra tosca, a porous sandstone highly valued in the traditional architecture of the Marina Alta.
Its durability and ease of carving made it the preferred building material for many historic landmarks in the area, including the Church of San Bartolomé in Jávea, the defensive walls of Dénia Castle and numerous stately homes throughout the region.
Archaeological remains from the Andalusi period also show that the cave was already in use nearly a thousand years ago. Historical records even mention a visit by King Philip III in 1599.
