We have good news for lovers of classical music, in the Alicante province, on Thursday 7th March, the opera Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini arrives at the Theatre Principal de Alicante.
One of the most beautiful and tragic love stories, that since it premiered in 1904 it continues to this day reaping successes. A unique masterpiece that has been revealed as a cultural event in the city of Alicante and this passionate opera should not be missed.
A work that the Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, creator of great operas such as La Boheme and Tosca, made immortal.
A piece based on the book by Pierre Loti Madama Chrysanthemum that Puccini turned into an operatic masterpiece moving the whole world and catapulting Madama Butterfly to the top of the operas most represented by operatic companies.
A Work, that on its premiere at La Scala in Milan, did not garner very good reviews, and that Puccini would rewrite from two to three acts (by dividing the second act in two) and making other successful changes, which made the second version of the opera, which premiered again in Brescia and which was a success and conquering the sibylline audience.
Madama Butterfly has travelled from Italy to the United States, passing through Argentina, the United Kingdom, New York, Paris, Spain and Japan... performing in the most important theatres on the globe; has been starred by performers of the likes of Rosina Storchio, Giuseppe De Luca, Geraldine Farrar and Enrico Caruso, Plácido Domingo and Monserrat Caballé, María Callas, Amy Castles and Tamaki Miura among others, being in turn adapted from the theatre and taken to the cinema on 8 occasions.
Puccini's opera in which the author reflects his particular universe based on a great woman (heroine) who, like him, is insecure, melancholic and vulnerable but never submissive; a woman who conquers us and manages to enter into the hearts of the spectators because of her fragility, sensitivity and delicacy, as well as her tragic history and the narrative power of the musical pieces of the Italian composer, which move you again and again.
In Nagasaki, Japan, the young geisha Cio Cio San, which means butterfly, falls in love and renounces her religion and family to marry under the Japanese rite (through a commercial agreement) with Pinkerton, an American naval officer.
Soon he must return to the US. Madama Butterfly waits for three years, time in which she raises their son alone, who was born after the officer returned to his country. During those years the young woman refuses to lose hope and thinks that her husband will return. Finally, Pinkerton returns with his legitimate American wife, to take his son and raise him in the US, at which point Cio Cio San's universe falls apart...
