Therefore, you will have to wait in anticipation until you can enjoy these unique pieces in our city, in the mean time we will tell you the interesting history of the Warriors of the Xian and their emperor.

The history of the Warriors of  Xian

Warriors of Xian China

In 1974, a peasant discovered by chance, whilst digging a well for water, the first soldier of the 8.000-existing ones guarding the tomb of the first emperor of China, Zhao Zheng, known as King Qin or Qin Shihuang Di. The mausoleum was found 30 kilometers from the city of Xian, in the province of Shaanxi in China. The tomb raised in the shape of a pyramid rose more than 40 meters, but its top (currently sunken) housed an underground palace with the remains of one of the most fascinating characters of China, its first emperor.

The story says that the 13-year-old emperor ordered the construction of this mausoleum that would house the representation of his army, in order to guarantee his protection in the afterlife. The building of this vault lasted for 36 years and more than 700,000 slaves worked on its construction.

Nowadays there are many visitors who travel to Xian to see this wonder of Chinese history, and it is not surprising, since the mausoleum of the King Qin is considered a World Heritage Site by Unesco since 1987.

Warriors of Xian

Xian warriors

The figure that the peasant found, would be the first of thousands of figures of the existing Terracotta Warriors of Xian. Since, the first statue of the warrior of Xian was found, the authorities were alerted and quickly archaeologists and historians went to work, until finally they discovered the mausoleum of the first Chinese emperor, buried along with more than 8.000 terracotta soldiers. Superior in size than normal, that reproduced the army with which Zhao Zheng managed to unify China under his command in 221 BC.

These figures of the Sian Warriors, who were part of the Emperor's guard, are very unusual, since no two are the same, each statue is unique and individual, some warriors are young, others are older, some have whiskers, others have not, the hairstyles are different, and we can even find represented different ethnic groups, in the same way, the different soldiers wear the uniform according to their rank. These figures, originally did not have the grey dull colour that we find now, but they were painted with bright colours, which have been lost with the passage of time and contact with the air.

Terracotta Horses

Equestrian statues of the King Qin army

Found In the mausoleum were several graves: Pit No. 1, was composed of an army in attack formation with 6.000 statues of horses and soldiers, a company of infantrymen and 30 lines of chariots. In Pit No. 2, there are 1.400 archers, chariots and infantrymen, and in Pit No. 3, the highest ranked battalion, there should be the statue of the commander-in-chief (not found) along with his 86 officers.

The Terracotta warriors and horses have been called the Eighth Wonder of the world and it is not surprising, due to the realism of their statues, their energy and strength, which perfectly embodies the spirit of the powerful Qin army. The statues give the sensation of a great expectant force waiting to attack, the horses watch with their ears raised and their nostrils dilated, ready for action. The scale in which the statues are made and the large number of warriors, horses, chariots etc... Attest to the vision and power of the emperor.

Looting of the tomb

Tomb of the King Qin in Xian China

After the discovery and during the excavations, when they were unearthing the mausoleum and its terracotta warriors, it was observed that the tomb had been looted before, since many of the terracotta soldiers had suffered the theft of their weapons or had been partial or totally destroyed.

Chinese history tells that after the death of the emperor there were a number of revolts, where numerous rebels, led by General Xiang Yu, entered the tomb, looted and burnt it, with time the remains of the looting were little by little covered by earth and vegetation, which left the mausoleum and the statues of the warriors of Xian sealed, until its rediscovery in 1974.

What do you think about the history of these unusual warriors and their Emperor? Isn’t it curious and exciting?

Well, this is an exhibition not to be missed, at the Marq in Alicante, which will make more than one dream come true, by bringing these fantastic pieces to our country and more specifically to our city of Alicante.
